exhausted from summer yet? the cooler fall days have slowly been creeping in here in portland & i am all about it. made some plum/blueberry jam yesterday from the last of the goods from my crazy abundant plum tree…the cozy times are here :)

…artist of the month…

(i have been renting old VHS & DVDs from Movie Madness in Portland and found my favorite artist of this past month from watching a trio of his animated films in the employee recommendations…oh how i have missed human recommendations for movies from the movie rental store! )

Karel Zemen (3 November 1910 – 5 April 1989) was a Czech film director, artist & animator. He is best known for directing fantasy films combining live-action with animation including Journey to the Beginning of Time (1955), The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (1962), and Invention of Destruction (1958).

Zeman has been called as one of the 20th century's most innovative and influential animators. He has been cited as an influence by (among others) Wes Anderson, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, and Jan Svankmajer.

(what i loved about the films were their dreamy quality of really analog animation and special effects [like colored ink in water or real smoke from a cut-out train overlaid over black & white live-action film]. they were perfectly realistic and surrealist dreamlike at the same time.)
